Site of the historic 'Church of the Good Shepherd', Lake Tekapo was one of the first settlements in the vast Mackenzie basin; a high country plain situated at the foot of the Southern Alps - New Zealand's largest mountain range.
Photo kindly supplied by Fraser Gunn The Mackenzie basin was named for the infamous sheep rustler who roamed the high country sheep stations with his faithful dog. A statue recognising the contribution of the working sheep dog in the Mackenzie, stands near the church on the shores of Lake Tekapo.
