At 710 metres (2300 ft) above sea level, Lake Tekapo, in the center of New Zealand's South Island is conveniently situated half way between Christchurch and Queenstown on State Highway 8. The east coast (Timaru) is a 60 minute drive, and New Zealand's highest point (Mt Cook) is 60 minutes further inland.

At the head of New Zealand's largest hydro power scheme, Lake Tekapo fills a valley gouged out by a glacier thousands of years ago. The rich turquoise color of the lake comes from ultra-fine glacial dust suspended in the water.

Visit in the winter and wake to a pristine snow-covered paradise, or in the spring to a flower-blanketed wonderland. Summer offers boating and skiing on the lake, and walking in the hills; or watch the land change through gold and reds in the Autumn.
